My Line of Design
My Line of Design (MLD) is a web log of sketches, projects, products and thoughts on current trends and some well established traditions in the private club and luxury resort markets. Private clubs include country clubs, golf clubs, yacht clubs, racket clubs, city clubs, polo clubs, fitness clubs and spas and resorts of distinction. These types of facilities are typically membership based and become the social and recreational center for their members.
To remain relevant and competitive, private clubs and resorts blaze the path with new amenities and services to attract new members and retain their current membership. As an architect and interior designer, the private club market is a niche market that requires a wide range of knowledge from long range master planning to the detailing of custom mill work. Finishes and furnishings in clubs and resorts must be durable to hold up to the daily use and back of the house operations must be functional to allow staff the ability to perform their work in an safe environment.
The name of the blog was inspired by a 1960’s game show called ‘What’s My Line’ that invited guest on the show and the panelist had to guess the ‘line of business’ or the occupation of the guest. The idea of a line of business and a line that architects and designers use to define everything from concepts to construction drawings, seemed appropriate for the title of My Line of Design.
MLD will discuss topics that range from current trends in long range master planning of a facility through the design and construction. Club managers, club leadership, facility managers, and those interested in the current direction of social and recreational facilities will find interest in MLD. We will also explore materials, manufactures, and products that we see in the industry. Sports, recreational and social activities change with each generation and MLD will discuss the design trends that attract the likes of Millennial’s to Baby Boomer’s and the influence of technology on how we choose to spend our leisure time in a community environment.
It is very exciting to be a part of the growth and expansion of some of the most beautiful and well operated facilities throughout the country and this blog provides an opportunity to share some of the ideas and products encountered in the process of designing buildings in my line of design.
